"Do not be too quick to condemn the man who no longer believes in God: for it is perhaps your own coldness and avarice and mediocrity and materialism and selfishness that have chilled his faith"
- Thomas Merton
Atheism
What are People actually "Saying" when they say they are an "Atheist (Don't believe in God)"? Likewise, what are people saying when they say they "Believe in God"? Without a precise "Personal Definition"... You don't actually Know "What" they are saying! Most of the time, what Atheists are actually saying is "I don't believe in the God of Orthodox Religion". In other words... "God" as Defined by Orthodox Religion. Likewise, most people say they "Believe in God" are saying they believe in the "God as defined by their Religion". The question though of "Is There a God?" is a very important one. It should be a constant one. Sincerely asking the Question... and searching for "Proof"... is part of the Quest for Truth about Ourselves and Our Existence. The "Products" of Sincere and Serious Inquiry is "Better Approximations" of Our Definitions of Universal Reality. The Human Mind may never be able to Grasp and Understand the Essence of Existence or even the Meaning of Our Existence Itself. Language takes us "so far" then Limits Our Understanding. Philosophers for thousands of years have asked the Question "Am I?". To date, the best "Proof" of Personal Existence is "I Am Because I Think I Am". If we can't empirically Prove the Existence of "Self"... how much of a challenge is it to Prove the Existence of "God"? Some people will say "It's a matter of Faith". Then some people will say "It's a matter of Science". Then there are those who will say "It is a matter of both Faith and Science... and perhaps a little "Something Else". Perhaps though... it will be those who say "It's a matter of Definition" that will be the most relevant in taking us closer to the Truth of the matter.
